Gray Hydrogen Production Process
→ Gray hydrogen is made using a process called steam methane reforming (SMR).
→ This is the most common way to make hydrogen all around the world.
→ But there's a difference between gray and blue hydrogen.
→ Gray hydrogen doesn't try to catch the carbon dioxide (CO2) gas made during the hydrogen-making process.
→ Instead, it lets this CO2 gas go into the air.
→ Here's a simple overview of how gray hydrogen is made:
- Feedstock
- Steam Methane Reforming (SMR)
- Heat Source
- Hydrogen Purification
- Hydrogen Compression and Distribution
(1). Feedstock
→ Gray hydrogen mostly comes from natural gas, which is mainly made of methane (CH4).
→ Natural gas is easy to get and doesn't cost a lot to use for making hydrogen.
(2). Steam Methane Reforming (SMR)
→ SMR is a common way to make gray hydrogen. In SMR, we mix methane with hot steam and a special helper called a catalyst.
→ This mixture creates hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide as leftovers.
→ Here's the chemical equation for this process:
→ Methane (CH4) + Steam (H2O) + Catalyst → Hydrogen Gas (H2) + Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
→ CH4 + 2H2O → 4H2 + CO2
(3). Heat Source
→ The SMR process needs a lot of heat to make it work.
→ Usually, this heat comes from burning some of the natural gas we start with.
→ But when we do this, it makes more of the CO2 pollution that's linked to making gray hydrogen.
(4). Hydrogen Purification
→ After we change the gas, it has hydrogen, a little bit of methane, and some other gases.
→ We need to clean the hydrogen by taking out things that don't belong, especially the methane.
→ This makes the hydrogen really clean and good for different uses.
(5). Hydrogen Compression and Distribution
→ The clean hydrogen gas is squished to the right pressure and can be sent to different places to be used in different ways, like making power in fuel cells, in factories, or for moving vehicles.
→ Gray hydrogen is a common way to make hydrogen because it's an established and inexpensive way.
→ However, it creates a lot of greenhouse gases, like CO2, which go into the air.
→ This causes problems with the environment and isn't a good way to make hydrogen in a clean and sustainable manner.
→ To make hydrogen in a way that's better for the environment, people are interested in using cleaner methods.
→ These include blue hydrogen (which captures and stores carbon) and green hydrogen (made using renewable energy and water).
→ These methods try to reduce or get rid of the carbon emissions linked to making hydrogen.
→ They're in line with efforts to fight climate change and have a more sustainable energy future.
