Green Hydrogen Production Process
→ Green hydrogen is made using clean energy like wind or sunlight to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen.
→ This process is called electrolysis. When the electricity comes from sources like wind or sun, it's called "green" hydrogen production. Let me explain how it works:
- Water Electrolysis
- Electrolyte
- Electricity Source
- Hydrogen Production
- Gas Separation
- Hydrogen Compression
- Storage and Distribution
- Utilization
(1). Water Electrolysis
→ The first thing in making green hydrogen is using electricity to split water.
→ This happens in a machine called an electrolyzer, which has two parts, like two batteries (an anode and a cathode), and something in the middle called an electrolyte.
(2). Electrolyte
→ The liquid in the battery is super important because it helps tiny particles move between the two ends, but it also stops gases from mixing.
→ People usually use things like a liquid called potassium hydroxide (KOH), another one called sodium hydroxide (NaOH), or special layers in some machines that help tiny particles move, like in proton exchange membrane electrolyzer.
(3). Electricity Source
→ To make hydrogen in a way that's good for the environment, we use electricity from things like windmills, Solar, or water power machines.
→ This electricity makes a process called electrolysis happen.
(4). Hydrogen Production
→ When electricity goes through the thing called an "electrolyzer," it makes water (H2O) break apart into two things:
→ hydrogen (H2) at one side and oxygen (O2) at the other side.
→ Here's what happens at each side:
→ Cathode: 2H₂O + 2e⁻ → 2H₂ + 2OH⁻ (Hydrogen gas is produced)
→ Anode: 4OH⁻ → 2H₂O + O₂ + 4e⁻ (Oxygen gas is produced)
(5). Gas Separation
→ When we make hydrogen and oxygen gases with electricity, we need to split them apart.
→ We can do this in different ways, like using a special wall, changing the pressure, or making them very, very cold.
(6). Hydrogen Compression
→ After we split it apart, we usually squish hydrogen gas to make it take up less space.
→ This helps us move it around and keep it in storage more easily.
(7). Storage and Distribution
→ Green hydrogen can be kept in different ways like squished air, liquid, or hard storage.
→ After that, it can be moved through pipes or in boxes to people who use it or factories.
(8). Utilization
→ Green hydrogen can be used in many ways.
→ It can make electricity in fuel cells, help with making things in factories, power vehicles like cars that use hydrogen, and store extra energy from things like wind and sun power.
→ Green hydrogen is good because it doesn't make dirty smoke, so it's good for the Earth.
→ But we need to make it better by using less power and more clean energy to help the environment even more.
