Prime Minister Modi posted a photo of himself on the beach to Instagram on January 5 and wrote,
For individuals who desire to embody the adventurer in them, Lakshadweep must be on your list.
A possible breach between India and the Maldives has been triggered by the seemingly ordinary image.
Following the Prime Minister's recent visit to Lakshadweep, three deputy ministers in the Maldives' Ministry of Youth Affairs Maryam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid made disparaging remarks against India and the Prime Minister, sparking the issue.
Shiuna made mention of India's ties to Israel on X, the former name of Twitter. Subsequently, her colleagues expressed their opinion that the purpose of the Indian Prime Minister's visit to Lakshadweep was to attack the Maldives' tourism industry, which is well-known for its luxurious seaside accommodations.
The three ministers were suspended by the Maldives government following a discussion of the matter between the Indian and Maldivian governments.
The Maldives government issued a statement saying,
The Maldives government is aware of derogatory remarks against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals on social media platforms.
These are the author's own views; the Maldivian government does not share them. According to the Maldives government,
freedom of expression has to be exercised responsibly.
One of India's most important maritime neighbors in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) is the Maldives. The Indian government's priorities under the "Neighbourhood First Policy" center on it, and it plays a specific role in projects like "SAGAR" (Security and Growth for All in the Region).
Shortly after taking office in November 2023, Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu gained notoriety when he requested that India remove its armed forces from the Maldives archipelago (an archipelago consisting of islands).
India has insisted that the primary goal of its military presence is to supply medical assistance to the nation's remote islands in the Indian Ocean. President Muizzu then had a meeting with Prime Minister Modi on December 1 at the climate summit in Dubai.
Global Times, a Chinese state media outlet, covered the current controversy ahead of Muizzu's visit to China, praising the president's foreign policy and stating,
It only demonstrates that Muizzu is treating India with a normal mindset and steering the relationship between the Maldives and India to a normal state-state relationship.
Indian celebrities, athletes, and business entrepreneurs, such as Varun Dhawan, Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Pooja Hegde, Madhur Bhandarkar, PV Sindhu, Shilpa Shetty, and Kunal Bahl, co-founder of Snapdeal, have written about their wish to visit Lakshadweep and other Indian islands amid the ongoing dispute between India and the Maldives.
Many Indians have canceled their vacation plans to the Maldives as a result of this scandal; screenshots of these cancellations have been trending on X. With #ExploreIndianIslands trending on X, people are also using X to start conversations about Indian beaches and islands.
