An electric car is really better, not a trade-off

In 2000, India introduced electric vehicles with the REVA, a small car. However, it had many limitations. Even though people liked the idea, REVA didn't become very popular because of its drawbacks. Then, in 2013, the government started promoting electric vehicles.

But there weren't enough places to charge them like there are for regular cars that use petrol or diesel. This made people worry about running out of battery before reaching their destination. Looking back, all these problems didn't just affect the users and the companies making electric vehicles, but the whole electric vehicle industry, leading people to think that electric vehicles are not the best option.

Insufficient first-hand riding experience

When the government started promoting electric vehicles (EVs) in India, the technology wasn't advanced enough. EVs were considered slower and couldn't travel long distances. Buying one was expensive, and maintenance costs were high too. It wasn't entirely the consumers' fault for not choosing EVs.

The industry also struggled to understand the differences between traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and EVs. On top of that, there were many issues with EVs like unreliability, limited range, short battery life, and costly replacements. Plus, the lack of a personal riding experience made people hesitant to switch from ICE vehicles to EVs.

But things have changed. With support from the central and state governments, many EV companies have entered the market. They're competing with traditional carmakers and making significant improvements in performance and ride experience.

Despite these improvements, changing people's perceptions about EVs based on past experiences requires actually riding one. Only then can they be pleasantly surprised by how much better EVs perform compared to ICE vehicles. EVs offer better response, smoothness, speed, agility, and nimbleness. Now, it's just a matter of giving them a try.

Perceptions about safety

Many people worry about whether electric cars are safe to use because of the batteries they use. These batteries, called lithium-ion batteries, can catch fire if they're damaged. When lots of companies hurried to make electric cars to get government subsidies, some didn't pay enough attention to safety. This led to a few incidents where electric cars caught fire in public, making people worried about their safety.

However, the government made sure that all companies improved their safety standards for electric cars. Now, electric cars are much safer, and there are very few reports of them catching fire anywhere in the country.

Anxiety over range: Multipurpose public charger

Range anxiety is when electric car drivers worry about running out of power before reaching their destination. A decade ago, there weren't many places to charge electric cars, making this anxiety worse. Now, things are improving.

The government is encouraging more charging stations, even at places like train stations and gas stations. Newer electric cars can go farther on one charge, like better phones that last longer on a single charge.

If you charge your car at home every night, you might not need to worry about finding charging stations as much. This is making people more confident about using electric cars, and more people are buying them every month.

Electric vehicle and battery maintenance-free

Car and battery life are big worries for people buying cars. Even though electric cars were seen as unreliable before, getting a new battery could be very expensive.

People thought electric cars were unreliable because they didn't have regular engines like normal cars, and different things could make the battery lose power. Also, batteries used to wear out faster before because they were made differently. But now, with better battery technology like lithium-ion batteries, people trust electric car batteries more.

Since the battery is a big part of an electric car, not having to do much maintenance on it means you don't have to do as much overall maintenance on an electric car compared to a regular car, which has more parts that move while driving. Electric cars are more like computers moving around.

It's like they say,

good things take time.

Over the last 15 years, with the government focusing more on electric cars and new innovations in the electric car industry, electric cars have been getting better and better. People just need to try them once to see how good they are. This will make more people switch to electric cars faster than they normally would.
