The Glen Grant announced that its famous master distiller, Dennis Malcolm, will retire after 63 years in the whisky business. He will receive much appreciation as he steps down and perhaps a few scotch casks. Today, Scotland’s longest-serving malt maker has received another farewell gift: a significant industry award.
The 2022 release of Glen Grant 21 was just named "Best In Show" scotch at the third annual TAG Global Spirits Awards. Here’s what you need to know about the $349 bottle and where to find it.
👉 Stress Management: Lifestyle Relaxation
Originally released in early 2023, Glen Grant's 21-Year-Old is largely the creation of Mr. Malcolm. He selected casks that had aged in either 100% ex-Oloroso sherry butts or ex-bourbon barrels. All the stock came from the distillery’s oldest warehouse in Rothes, a historic whisky-making village.
Malcolm chose liquid that smells and tastes tropical fruit, with a creamy texture. The small batches he combined create a complex but easy-to-enjoy whisky. The 92-proof liquid gives off a scent of peppered pineapple when poured into a Glencairn glass, followed by a fruity taste and a final hint of creme brûlée.
👉 Work-life balance wins: A simple guide to being happier
The judges at TAG were likely impressed by this elegant progression of flavors, awarding it 96 out of 100 points. This is a higher score than any other scotch blended, single malt, or grain in this year’s contest.
The release is part of The Glen Grant’s Principal Collection, showcasing the distillery’s signature style: light and fresh like a flower garden. Visitors to the distillery can see its 22-acre botanical garden, established by the second-generation distiller "Major" James Grant in 1886.
👉 Andes Survival: Flight Crash
Visiting the distillery in Speyside is a must for any serious scotch lover. But if you’re planning a trip, you can still enjoy a taste of it at home by opening a bottle of the award-winning Glen Grant 21.
The 2022 edition that won the award is a limited release, so it’s not cheap. You can find it priced between $340-$440 at American retailers. It’s perfect for celebrating retirement, though Mr. Malcolm might prefer a 63-year-old whisky to mark his long career.
Stay tuned for more "Best In Show" winners from this year’s TAG Global Spirits Awards.
