The Electric BMW iX Review

This big, cool SUV is called the BMW iX. It's a large electric car made by a German company. It's like other fancy SUVs, such as the Audi Q8 e-tron and Mercedes EQE SUV. If you want something fancier than the Kia EV9 but don't need too much space, you might like this one.

Nowadays, having a big electric SUV for families isn't unusual, but BMW's designers made this one stand out. It looks quite unique on the outside. Some people might really like its bold design, while others might not be fans. It's a bit like Marmite – you either love it or hate it, but you definitely have an opinion!

The iX has sharp lines and big features, like its large grille and squinty headlights. It's a busy-looking design, especially in white. Some might even say it looks like a mix between a crashed Space Shuttle Discovery and a giant robotic beaver. Maybe NASA needs to know!

Although its size is similar to the X5 SUV, the iX has a roomier interior, more like the bigger X7. Even though it doesn't have seven seats like some SUVs, its cabin is luxurious, high-tech, and eco-friendly.

BMW iX: Electric Range, Battery and Charging data

This car has big screens inside that look like one big screen. They are very impressive. You also get a place to charge your phone wirelessly, many USB ports, and other useful features.

The car is built very well and has lots of space inside for five people. However, the space in the trunk could be a bit bigger.

You can choose from three versions of the car. They all have electric motors and batteries under the floor. The basic one has 326 horsepower and can go about 264 miles on a full charge. The most powerful one has 619 horsepower and can go about 349 miles on a full charge. They can all charge quickly at special charging stations.

👉 An electric car is really better, not a trade-off

No matter which version you choose, this car is great to drive. It's easy to drive in the city and comfortable on the highway. It's also quiet and quick when you need it to be. It handles well, even on twisty roads.

BMW iX: Performance and drive comfort

The iX is a big car, so it needs a lot of space on city streets. But it has good visibility and a helpful surround-camera system for parking. It even has a feature called Parking Assistant that can park the car for you.

Since it's electric, it doesn't produce any harmful exhaust fumes, which is great for city driving. Electric cars like the iX also have quick acceleration, which is useful when starting from a stop in traffic.

Even though it has large alloy wheels, the iX is still comfortable to drive in the city, especially the xDrive 50 version with air suspension. It smooths out bumps in the road well. The xDrive40 version doesn't have air suspension but is still comfortable enough for city driving.

👉 The issue with battery-electric cars

On the motorway, the iX is remarkably quiet. There's hardly any wind noise or tire noise. You mostly hear other traffic around you.

No matter which version of the iX you choose, it accelerates quickly up to 70mph. It's so smooth that you might need to watch your speed closely to avoid going faster than you intend.

BMW iX: Interior Style and Infotainment

  • Screen - 14.9 inch

BMW iX: Interior Style and Infotainment

The interior of the iX is not just modern, it's futuristic. It combines different materials and finishes to create a luxurious and cohesive look. The main focus is on the twin-screen displays that cover most of the dashboard, called BMW Live Cockpit Plus.

One screen shows driving essentials like speed and range, while the other handles infotainment. The 14.9-inch screen is high-quality and clear, though navigating through menus might seem daunting at first. Using the iDrive rotary controller is easier and less distracting while driving compared to touching the screen.

You can also connect your smartphone wirelessly with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The temperature controls are always visible, but adjusting fan speed requires accessing a menu.

BMW offers accessories like laptop trays and coat hangers, but they're not as user-friendly or well-designed as the rest of the car. However, some features, like floor mats made from recycled materials and leather upholstery tanned with olive leaves, showcase the car's commitment to sustainability. The wood used in the interior is responsibly sourced as well.

BMW iX: Exterior design and styling

BMW iX: Exterior design and styling

The BMW iX design was first shown in 2017 with the iNext Concept. It looks very modern and different from other BMW cars because it's made of electric power. The front of the iX has BMW's big grille, but it doesn't need air for cooling like traditional cars. Instead, it has cameras and sensors for safety features. The headlights have a new style, and the backlights are sleek too.

In the sporty M Sport version, the front has sharp lines for better airflow, and the back is smoother. Other cool features include frameless doors, fixed pillars between the front and back doors, a fixed hood, and slanted windows. The iX can have big 22-inch wheels with a special design for better aerodynamics and tires with a specific size.

➥ BMW iX: Electric range and charging

The BMW iX comes in electric versions only, meaning it produces no exhaust emissions. It's even better if you charge it with renewable energy.

Though electric cars don't emit exhaust, they differ in efficiency. For electric vehicles, how many miles they can go per kilowatt hour of electricity is like miles per gallon for traditional cars. The xDrive40 can go about 3.0 miles per kilowatt hour, which is good for a big electric SUV with strong performance. The more powerful xDrive50 achieves about 2.9 miles per kilowatt hour.

So, you might think the less powerful model can go further on one charge. But, the xDrive40 has a smaller battery with a 74-kilowatt-hour capacity, while the xDrive50 has a larger 108-kilowatt-hour battery, giving it a longer range.

Unfortunately, the bigger battery isn't an option for the base model, as its range is somewhat limited. Officially, it's supposed to cover up to 257 miles, but in cold weather, you can expect closer to 200 miles.

In real-world testing, we found the xDrive50 could go about 303 miles mostly on motorways, which is 82% of its claimed range of 369 miles. It was the only car in the test to achieve more than 80%, but its efficiency figure of 2.7 miles per kilowatt hour was the worst, likely because it's heavy and has a boxy shape. For comparison, the Ford Mustang Mach-E achieved 3.3 miles per kilowatt hour.

➥ BMW iX: Reliability and Issues

The iX is a new car. It's too soon to know for sure if it's reliable. Electric cars usually have fewer parts that can break, so they're often more reliable than cars with regular engines. But there's still lots of fancy stuff in the iX that could have problems. It's too early to tell, but BMW usually ranks somewhere in the middle in surveys about how happy owners are with their cars and how reliable they are.

➥ BMW iX: Safety and Security

BMW iX: Safety and Security

The BMW iX got the highest safety rating from Euro NCAP in 2021. It did really well in protecting adults, children, and pedestrians, and also in its safety assistance systems.

Some smart features helped it get these good scores. For example, it has an airbag between the front seats to make side collisions safer. It also has helpful systems like lane attention assistant, lane departure warning, and speed limit recognition.

Additionally, every iX has a system that can automatically brake to prevent accidents. It's advanced enough to detect pedestrians, cyclists, and other vehicles on the road.
